Ryan Reynolds: Why Free Guy is more than a ‘video game movie’

Though Ryan Reynolds’ summer blockbuster Free Guy is set in a video game, this movie goes above and beyond the console.

What is the plot?

Set in Free City (which is the fictional backdrop of a popular video game), this film explores the life of Guy (a very normal, ordinary bank clerk). Guy learns to question the world around him, learning about his identity as a background character in a video game. Whilst other characters are operated by humans in the “real world”, Guy’s existence consists of repetitive menial routines. This is because he is a non-playable character.

No matter what happens to Guy during the day (whether he is injured, robbed at gunpoint, or simply engages in small talk with his barista) each morning is a fresh start and remnants of the previous day are wiped away.

Notably, Guy is the only non-playable character that is able to think for himself. As time goes by, he meets a Molotov girl (operated by a human in the “real world” named Millie) and communication begins. Millie supports Guy in finding out more about the fictional world around him. In turn, Guy is drawn in to challenge Antwan (Free City’s creator, a profit-chasing video gamer owner who stole Millie’s coding and Internet Protocol).

Why does it matter?

The film is certainly, in part, about video games. The Telegraph’s Ed Power notes that “Video gaming culture has a wide puerile streak, and Free Guy isn’t afraid to lean into it.” Molly Freeman from Screen Rant is in agreement, describing that Free Guy is “the best video game movie ever.”

However, there is more to it. “It’s interesting to me,” Reynolds adds. “Everybody says ‘it’s a movie based on a video game’. I really don’t think Free Guy is a video game movie. That’s like saying Titanic is a movie about boatmanship.

“It’s a movie about so much more. But I loved the narrow target we had to hit to create a world which felt authentic to gamers and then still smuggles this other story into that.”

And that story is about mutual respect, teamwork, and pride. Even a quick look at Ryan Reynolds’ YouTube campaign relating to this film tells you just that. In a video entitled ‘Best Supporting Actors‘, Reynolds shines a light on the film’s extras, and on the passions that make up the mosaic of their lives. ‘You know what? No ones in the background,’ sаys background actor Brandon Scales.

Although this film is set in a video game and reflects on pertinent issues in the technology sphere, it also touches on an aspect important to all of us: mutual respect and recognition. As Guy’s story shows, even a very ordinary background character has a winding story to uncover and a vital role to play.

October Movie Theatre Sales Up; Signaling a Very Merry Christmas

Thanks to Halloween, theatres enjoyed good customer flow throughout October. From the looks of things, this holiday season is looking suitable for theatres too. Comscore records show that domestic box office stands to rake in over 600 million dollars this holiday season.

What Made October the Right Month

Virtually every week in October saw the release of a big film. Hits like Dune, Halloween Kills, No Time to Die, and Venom: Let there be Carnage were all opening on various dates giving theatres much need action. Thanks to these blockbusters, October will be the highest-grossing box office in 2021.

Theatres had taken a hit during the height of the Covid 19 pandemic. The recent improvements, though much appreciated, are still not at the pre-corona level. October only shows that the demand for movie theatres is resurfacing, and the business can expect a good business fortune in the coming months.

Domestic and international theatres have a lot to look forward to this holiday season, according to Shwan Robbins, the Chief Analyst at BoxOffice.com. This is thanks to some upcoming heavy hitters expected to roll out any time between November and December. First up is a movie that most fans have been anxiously waiting for, Eternals. The movie is set to roll out on November 5th. Staring famous actors like Angelina Jolie and Kit Harington, the movie is expected to attract a massive crow to theatres.

Two weeks after the release of Eternals, Ghostbusters: Afterlife by Sony goes live in theatres. This film stars Paul Rudd and is a continuation of the 1984 classic. Robbins added that these two films should see a good number of viewers make their way to the nearest movie theatre before December gets here with more movie goodness. Thanksgiving Day will see the release of Encanto, a Spanish animation that reminds viewers to mean toxic family dynamics before they become costly. Definitely, a must-watch for the whole family.

Next on the roster is House of Gucci, starring the one and only Lady Gaga. Viewers can not contain their excitement for the true-crime drama perfect for viewers of all ages. Once December rolls in, it’s all guns, blazing starting with the musical Westside Story by 20th Century Studios followed closely by Warner Bros’ The Matrix Resurrections.

In essence, December is dominated by Spider-man: No way Home. But before viewers get to enjoy Marvel’s most recent thriller film, they will be treated to Resurrections which will debut on HBO Max and in theatres simultaneously. It is essential to note CNN, Warner Bros, and HBO Max share the same corporate parent.

Then Spider-man: No Way Home debuts on December 17th. Based on previous performances by Marvel films, “Spider-man: No Way Home” may end up opening to $100 million or even more. If all goes as expected, 2022 holds the promise of good performance for theatres and BoxOffice. Viewers have their fingers crossed for a blockbuster movie from Marvel in 2022. Jeff Bock, the Senior analyst at Exhibitor Relations, told CNN Business that he believes Marvel has been the cornerstone of cinema for a hot minute now. He expects the new film to open big. Everyone expects a grand opening from marvel, and thanks to the hype around the film, it is highly likely to happen.

Filming of the Batgirl movie is expected to begin soon

Adil El Arbi, the co-director of Batgirl, teased in a recent Instagram Stories post that the new HBO Max Batgirl film will begin production shortly.

Adil El Arbi, the film’s co-director, has suggested that production would begin shortly. Arbi recently directed Bad Boys For Life with co-director Bilall Fallah, which fared very well for a film published in 2020 amid the current COVID-19 epidemic. Additionally, they are now serving as directors for Marvel Studios on the forthcoming Ms. Marvel series for Disney+. They’ve chosen Christina Hodson to write the script for Batgirl, after her work on Birds of Prey and the forthcoming The Flash film. Although the exact date of the film’s debut in 2022 is uncertain, it will be streamed primarily on HBO Max.

Leslie Grace to play the heroine

Leslie Grace has been cast as Batgirl in the upcoming DC Comics series. This means she will also play Barbara Gordon in the film, bringing her to the big screen for the first time since she first appeared on the ’60s Batman TV show.

Grace’s WB’s In the Heights adaption was her first film performance, and it was much praised when it was released. J.K. Simmons will reprise his role as Commissioner Gordon in Zack Snyder’s Batgirl, but the storyline details are few at this point. Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, or another actor may reprise the role of Batman in the film, although it isn’t clear which one. Jacob Scipio is now playing an unspecified character, while Brendan Fraser is portraying the villain Garfield Lynns, popularly known as Firefly, in the next movie.

Adil El Arbi, one of the film’s co-directors, has now teased the start of production for the film. An Instagram Stories photo by Arbi (via ComicBook.com) shows him posing with what seems to be members of the film’s cast and crew. With the phrase “Getting closer to shoot,” it is safe to assume that the movie will begin production in the near future.

DC has not given Batgirl much chance to shine in live-action adaptations, despite her success in animation and comics. People who wish to see a fresh take on Barbara Gordon will like this forthcoming film. WB’s recent habit of not adhering to a strong line of continuity is also reflected in this new season of the show. Despite the fact that Simmons’ Gordon will appear, the fact that an unknown Batman may possibly arrive implies that they are less concerned with the issue. This might be a good thing for the movie since WB/DC have already had success with films like Joker and The Batman that are not related.

The picture shared by Arbi is an intriguing update on the highly awaited Batgirl film. Since the film is scheduled to be released in 2022, shooting will most likely begin within the next few weeks to guarantee that the film is ready for distribution on time. It is also evident that the filmmakers are enthusiastic about Batgirl and the film as a whole, which is quite nice to see. The standalone Batgirl film is essential for the character to be given the opportunity to become the leader in a picture, and this film seems to be on its way to achieving that goal.

Top 10 Best Music Moments from Quentin Tarantino Movies

Pulp Fiction – “Misirlou” Changing to “Jungle Boogie”

While we don’t hear the full song, “Misirlou” by Dick Dale is the tune most associate with Pulp Fiction.

This may be because the song is the first thing we hear at the beginning of the film. It plays during the opening credits before being abruptly cut off by someone switching radio stations, only to stop on “Jungle Boogie” by Kool and the Gang.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 – O-Ren Ishii’s Entrance to the House Of Blue Leaves is Accompanied by “Battle Without Honor or Humanity”

“Battle Without Honor or Humanity” by Tomoyasu Hotei is no doubt the theme of the two-part saga, Kill Bill.

Even though many may think of the song’s commanding presence at the House of Blue Leaves even during The Bride’s epic sword duel with O-Ren Ishii, it actually appears sooner.

The extravagant melody plays in the background as the crime boss and Crazy 88 first enter the restaurant. The insertion at a relatively peaceful scene foreshadowed the bloodshed that was soon to come.

Jackie Brown – Jackie Brown Lip Syncing “Across 110th Street”

“Across 110th Street” has a strong presence as a theme.

It begins the film by playing over the opening credits of Jackie Brown. However, the truly defining moment of this movie’s theme comes at the end. After Jackie Brown survives the ‘repugnant shit’ she had to deal with, she’s sitting back behind the wheel of her car, lip syncing the lyrics to “Across 110th Street” by Bobby Womack.

Django Unchained – Django and Broomhilda Looking for “Freedom”

Anthony Hamilton and Elayna Boynton’s “Freedom” is a song filled with heartbreaking lyrics and darker themes that was too perfectly suited for Django Unchained.

The film is a raw portrayal of pre-Civil War in the South before developing into a tale of revenge. Its most noteworthy moment of this is during a flashback Django has of his attempt at escape with his wife, Broomhilda, which is intertwined with scenes of her torture.

“Freedom” plays throughout, making an already dark moment truly haunting.

Reservoir Dogs – “Stuck in The Middle with You” Plays as Mr. Blonde Tortures Marvin

The level of Mr. Blonde’s evil character is shown throughout the film, but its limits aren’t made crystal clear until the infamous warehouse scene.

He takes the time to change stations on the radio until it lands on “Stuck in the Middle with You” by Stealers Wheel, then proceeds to torture Marvin Nash by cutting off his ear. Before he can burn the man, however, Mr. Blond is shot by Mr. Orange with a round of bullets, the same moment the song abruptly cuts off.

A tune discussing the ‘wrong place at the wrong time’ theme matches Marvin’s predicament quite well.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – Sharon Tate’s Relationship with Music

Unlike other moments mentioned on this list, this one (or two) involves something much more lighthearted, and it’s all due to Sharon Tate.

Her connection with music is undoubtedly strong, and this is especially shown twice in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. This first scene showcases her letting loose and feeling the music as she dances to Paul Revere and the Raiders’ “Good Thing” on her record player.

The second scene shows Sharon in tranquil bliss as her Porsche radio plays Buffy St. Marie’s cover of “The Circle Game” by Joni Mitchell.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” Plays while Cliff Takes Out the Manson Followers

Vanilla Fudge’s “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” gets extra attention because of its place during the reimagined night of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Stuntman Cliff Booth plays the song to enjoy his upcoming ‘journey’ when three members of the Manson Family barge into the Dalton household. Cliff, his dog, and Rick’s wife Francesca all jump on the intruders and make them regret ever stepping into the house.

Inglourious Bastards – Shosanna Getting Ready on the Premiere During David Bowie’s “Cat People”

David Bowie’s “Cat People” was the icing on the cake during the explosive ending scene of Inglourious Bastards.

It takes place at the premiere of a Nazi propaganda film held in La Gamaar Cinema, which is owned by Shosanna. She is unaware that her plans are to be sabotaged by Lt. Aldo Raine and the Basterds, who intend to show their own premiere for Third Reich on the same night.

“Cat People” plays over a montage of Shosanna as she gets ready for the event, which heightens the tension as the melody emphasizes both fury and elegance.

Pulp Fiction – Vincent And Mia Dancing To “You Never Can Tell”

Earlier, it was mentioned that “Misirlou” was the theme of Pulp Fiction, but Chuck Berry’s “You Never Can Tell” is perhaps the most defining moment in the film.

Vincent takes his boss’ wife, Mia, to the ‘50s-style diner Jack Rabbit Slim’s for fun. However, she eventually talks him into entering a dance contest. Their choreography to “You Never Can Tell” is spontaneous and amateur, but its charm gets them the grand prize.

Pulp Fiction – Mia Dancing to “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon”

Urge Overkill’s cover of “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” by Neil Diamond is perhaps one of the most iconic moments.

Why? Because the build-up starts long before the time the song plays. The high from being crowned with the winning dance and holding strong chemistry ultimately makes things awkward for Vincent and Mia. Where Vincent escapes to the bathroom to collect himself, Mia dances to “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” in the living room.

However, the song only adds to Vincent’s conflicted emotions, which prevents him from noticing Mia’s error in mistaking the heroin in his coat for cocaine, leading to an overdose.

Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Will Make Movies for Netflix

Two film entertainment bigwigs, Amblin, led by Steven Spielberg, and Netflix, have signed a deal that will allow the former to produce and release multiple films for Netflix every year. This partnership reflects Netflix’s exponential rise in the film industry and its acceptance among renowned directors, such as Spielberg. It also shows a change in the industry; an age when home viewing gradually renders movie theaters obsolete.

In a press release posted on 21 June 2021, Spielberg’s global film and TV studio and Netflix expressed their enthusiasm and support for the partnership. Although the article didn’t reveal many details about the deal, it quoted the leaders of both parties.

“Steven is a leader and visionary with great creativity. His compelling stories and characters have inspired many people around the world, including myself. Netflix is happy to partner with Amblin, and we’re zealous to come together with their (Amblin’s) team. Our staff is thrilled and happy to be part of this memorable and historical chapter of Steven Spielberg’s cinematic experience,” commented Ted Sarandos, Netflix Co-CEO, and Executive Content Officer.

Spielberg, who was reportedly opposed to Netflix’s inclusion in the 2019’s Academy Awards, also had something positive to say about the partnership: “From the first moment Ted and I sat down to discuss this agreement, we knew that we had a great opportunity to tell our stories together in a different way. Netflix provides a new platform for our films. Combine that with the stories we continue to tell with our long-term friends at Universal and other companies, this partnership provides me with a fulfilling experience of working with Ted, Scott, and their team at Netflix.”

The deal represents a significant win for Netflix, which will get a consistent stream of Amblin features, although it doesn’t guarantee productions by Spielberg Pictures. At the same time, Amblin will carry on working on films with Universal, a move meant to preserve and protect the traditional theatrical experience. While Amblin has worked with Netflix to distribute its movies and shows on various streaming platforms, this agreement is the most significant they’ve signed thus far.

According to Scott Stuber, Netflix Chief of Global Films, “Amblin and Steven and great entertainment are one thing. You can’t separate them. Their enthusiasm and creativity enable to create films that entertain and challenge viewers. We can’t wait to start working with Steven, Jeff, and the entire Amblin fraternity on a new chapter of film production that will captivate audiences for generations to come.”

The partnership comes when Amblin has solidified its niche in the film and TV industry by releasing movies that have bagged coveted awards. For instance, the Green Book won the Best Oscar Picture, while 1917 took three Oscar awards, two Golden Globes and accrued over $385 million in the global box office. Nonetheless, Amblin and Netflix had previously partnered to create The Trail of the Chicago 7, nominated to the Academy Awards.

The coronavirus pandemic in 2020 might have suggested to Steven Spielberg that movie-streaming platforms are not going away soon. However, it is the future of the film industry and provides many business opportunities for Amblin. Today, the theatrical experience is a super spreader of COVID-19, and consumers are happy to watch movies at home and pay a “premier” for that. That said, Amblin’s deal with Netflix is perhaps the best move for the company.

Are Movie Theaters Safe at This Point of the Pandemic?

When the pandemic began, many places shut down. Today, news outlets report on companies, stores, and other locations opening back up. Many people are looking forward to returning to their favorite locales. For some, the movie theater is a fun destination to gather with friends and enjoy a movie. Others might wonder if going to the theater is safe, especially since the pandemic is ongoing. A trip to the theater can be an enjoyable experience if appropriate safety measures are in place.

The Covid-19 Virus

The Covid-19 virus travels through the air and can make a person sick by infiltrating their lungs, eyes, nose, or mouth. Some people have severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, coughing, or fever, while others may experience no symptoms. Anyone can carry the virus and pass it to others.

Vaccinated vs. Unvaccinated

According to the CDC, vaccinated people can engage in activities without a mask unless required by law. If you are vaccinated, you can enjoy a somewhat normal experience at the movie theater. However, the vaccine lowers but does not eliminate the chances of catching the virus, so you still need to adhere to health regulations in theaters.

People who are not vaccinated must take precautions and safety measures at the movie theater because they are susceptible to the virus. Unvaccinated people must wear a mask and follow social distancing rules to protect others and themselves from covid.

People who have a compromised immune system should continue to take precautions, even if they have received the vaccine. The virus can cause severe damage to people who do not have a healthy immune system. If anyone experiences symptoms before going to the theater, they should stay home.

Tips for Staying Safe at the Theater

Before you visit the local theater, conduct online research to see if the theater area is safe. If there have been cases of covid in or near the theater, you might want to stay home or visit another theater.

You should also check the size of the theater building. For a safer experience, visit a theater with lots of space and ventilation. A small theater with little room and ventilation means that people will be close together, and the virus will travel easily. See if the theater has social distancing guidelines, preferably 6 feet or more.

Theater food is part of the experience, and if you are vaccinated, you can enjoy a snack at the theater but distance yourself from others. If you are not vaccinated or are immunocompromised, you should refrain from eating until you are away from others.

Finally, you want to see the theater’s protocol for cleaning. Contact the theater and ask them about their cleaning measures. Some questions you can ask are:

· Does the theater clean the area after viewing?

· Are there hand sanitizer bases for you to use?

· Should you wear a mask at all times?

· Does the theater do temperature checks?

You can also bring personal cleaning supplies to the theater. Use a wipe to clean up the seat before you sit or, bring a bottle of hand sanitizer to use when you need it. If you plan on taking a trip to the movie theater with family or friends, keep these tips in mind to ensure that everyone remains safe.
